Cultural Beliefs to Unlearn

Belief is where ideas go to die, so they can live forever. At least that is what we hope will happen.

Yesterday, I watched a video of Pastor Greg Locke on Facebook. I’m no longer a believer in the Christian canon but I remain open to perspectives. As I listened, I remembered how crucial it was that I always be “right”. Not just as a Christian, but as a person. “You must be right” is not a religious belief, it’s a cultural myth, because the groups in our culture that espouse “rightness” transcend religion. For example, here is a short list of all the groups who are “right” about what they claim, think and do:

Republicans

Democrats

Vegans

Carnivores

Flat Earthers

Round Earthers

Atheists

Christians

Scientists

Sceptics

And the list goes on and on.

I’ve come to realize that having an open mind does not mean I have to change my mind. I’ve also come to realize that I actually can choose and I’m not beholden to blindly obey “Mother Culture”.

Belief is not necessary and I can question as many as I choose.
